Importance of Crowdfunding for Indie Games
The success of Undertale and Pillars of Eternity has highlighted that in this current age, developers do not require the financial backing of corporate investors but rather solely rely upon the consumers themselves with platforms like Patreon and Kickstarter (Wain, 2022). Giving an alternative way to secure the necessary budget needed to develop the games. Crowdfunding has also given more creative freedom to develop games as most mainstream investors would limit that freedom to reduce risks on their investment to which public or customers do not mind those risks as the most individual contribution is small, and their main return is the final product, not the profits.
It is vital that when it comes to marketing in this industry, we analyse these crowdfunding projects as this can give us an answer to what kinds of gamers are more willing to invest in these games which can help us further understand the market and be able to accurately target those niche gamers.
