Mysteries of Sunless Sea
Imagine a world filled with a dull emerald-coloured ocean with few islands that are safe for humans as you venture through endless shadow on a steamboat with flickering lamps as your only eyes to the vast unknown of the sea without the sun. This is the world of Sunless Sea where you play as a hopeful sailor captaining a ship with odd sets of crewmates to achieve a better life. What got my attention towards the game is its world-building as this combines 19th-century Steampunk and Ocean horror with from screeching zee bats to towering Lifebergs but that’s not all it also involves nations and pirates who will react to the choices you make. You get to manage your ship from its cargo, fuel, supplies, weapons and the lamp, the only way to keep your sanity and vision when traversing through the vast dark dangerous ocean.
When it comes to death the game restarts the whole exploration with few benefits and new characters so each time you die or retire you have a slight advantage over the journey but would reset all the progress you made thus encouraging you to continue the expedition even through death but try different angles to solve certain issues. World of Sunless Sea might be large but its lore is even larger as each island holds a unique story that helps in your journey or understand better about the world as you deal with a civil war between the rats and the guinea pigs, strange cults controlling an island, rouge pirates, sentient statues with mysterious powers, landmarks containing dark history and so on.
I would recommend this game due to its massive world-building and its amazing concepts along with an engaging gameplay and mechanic that further enhances the value of the game overall but also warn about the massive amount of time needed to finish this which can be slightly discouraging. However, it is an impressive explorative indie game.
